Dog Eye Discharge: What Is Normal and When to See a Vet

A small amount of grey or reddish-brown crust in the inner corner of both eyes overnight is normal. Anything green, yellow, thick or bloody, anything that comes with squinting, redness, cloudiness or pawing at the face, and anything that appears in one eye only, is a vet appointment.

Eyes are the one part of grooming where waiting a week to see what happens is a genuinely bad idea. Some eye conditions cost vision in days.

What normal looks like

Clear, wet, symmetrical. A little accumulated crust in the inner corners in the morning that wipes away with a damp pad and does not come back within the hour. No smell, no colour, no squinting, no change in how the dog behaves.

Some dogs — flat-faced breeds, and dogs with loose lower lids — run wetter than others their whole lives without anything being wrong. What matters is the baseline for your dog, and whether it has changed.

The four signs that upgrade anything to urgent

Whatever the discharge looks like, these four change the timescale:

1. Squinting. A dog holding an eye partly shut is telling you it hurts. Corneal ulcers do this, and they get deeper quickly.
2. Cloudiness that was not there yesterday. Sudden cloudiness with a red eye can be glaucoma, which is both painful and a rapid threat to sight.
3. One eye only. Asymmetry means something specific happened to that eye.
4. Pawing or face-rubbing. The dog is actively making it worse while you read this.

None of those need a diagnosis from you. They need a phone call.

What you can safely do at home

Very little, which is the honest answer.

You can wipe accumulated crust away from the corner with a cotton pad dampened with plain warm water or sterile saline, working from the inner corner outward, using a fresh pad for each eye. You can flush an eye with sterile saline eye wash if something obvious blew into it. You can put a cone on to stop rubbing. You can keep the hair around the eyes trimmed short.

You cannot tell an ulcer from conjunctivitis by looking, and neither can anyone else without a stain and a light. That is the whole reason the appointment exists.

What not to do

• Do not use leftover eye drops from a previous prescription, another pet, or a person. Steroid drops on an ulcerated cornea are actively dangerous.
• Do not use human redness-relief drops.
• Do not try to remove anything embedded in the eye or under the lid yourself.
• Do not apply a warm compress to a painful eye and wait it out.
• Do not delay because the dog is eating normally. Dogs are unreliable reporters of eye pain.

Grooming habits that prevent some of it

Keep the hair short around the eyes, particularly on curly and long-coated dogs where a fringe sits directly on the cornea. Rinse the face with plain water after dusty or sandy walks. Keep shampoo away from the head until last and use a cloth rather than pouring.

What to do now

If your dog has anything on the urgent list — squinting, cloudiness, redness, pawing, one-sided change — put a cone on and phone your vet today. If it is morning crust in both eyes that wipes away and stays away, that is your dog's normal, and a damp cotton pad is the entire treatment.
