A good bed supports joints, survives washing, and actually gets used. Start with the fill, because that is what fails first: shredded foam and fiber beds compress into a pancake within months under a heavy dog, while a solid slab of foam holds its shape and keeps a senior's elbows off the floor. Orthopedic is a marketing word with no legal definition, so read the fill description rather than the label. Second, check that the cover comes off and goes in a machine — a bed you cannot wash is a bed you will throw out after the first muddy week or the first accident. Third, size up. Manufacturer sizing runs optimistic, and a dog that sleeps stretched out needs more bed than one that curls. Cheap beds are the right call for chewers and for crate liners you expect to replace. Pay for real foam only when the dog is heavy, old, arthritic, or all three.
