Best Dog Food

We evaluate food on manufacturer standards (WSAVA guidelines, feeding trials), AAFCO life-stage fit, caloric density, and cost per day — not marketing claims. The first thing to find on any bag is the AAFCO statement, usually in small print near the ingredient panel. It tells you which life stage the food is formulated for, and whether that formulation was confirmed by a feeding trial or only by calculation. Most of what is printed on the front — grain-free, ancestral, human-grade, holistic — is either unregulated or means less than it sounds. The ingredient list is ordered by weight before cooking, which is why fresh meat can top a list while contributing less protein than a meal further down it. Compare calories per cup rather than price per bag: a dense food costs more per bag and less per day. Switch foods over a week or so rather than overnight, and remember the best food is the one your dog actually eats and digests.
