We evaluate food on manufacturer standards (WSAVA guidelines, feeding trials), AAFCO life-stage fit, protein quality, and cost per day — not marketing claims. Cats are obligate carnivores, and that single biological fact should shape the whole decision: they depend on animal protein and on nutrients such as taurine that they cannot produce in sufficient quantity themselves. Check the AAFCO statement for the life stage, and check that the food is complete and balanced rather than labeled for intermittent or supplemental feeding — treat-style toppers often are. Wet food carries water, and cats are poor drinkers by nature, which is the practical argument for feeding some of it. Dry food is cheaper per calorie and easier to leave out, at the cost of that water. Free-feeding dry food is how indoor cats get heavy. Never crash-diet a cat that has gained weight: rapid weight loss in cats is genuinely dangerous, so any reduction plan belongs with your vet.
