Bringing Your Puppy Home: The First Car Ride

Bring a second adult, skip the meal beforehand, and put the puppy in a secured carrier rather than loose in the car. The drive home is often a puppy's first time away from their litter, in a moving box, with strangers. The goal is not to make it fun. The goal is to make it uneventful.

Before you get in the car

Do a toilet stop at the breeder or shelter, in their garden, before you load up. A puppy who has just emptied out is far less likely to have an accident and far more likely to sleep.

Ask for something that smells of the litter — a scrap of blanket, a piece of vet bed. Breeders expect this request. That smell is the most useful thing you will take home, and it earns its keep again on night one.

What to have in the car

Restrain the carrier itself. A carrier sliding around a footwell teaches a puppy that cars are unpredictable, and in a sudden stop an unsecured carrier becomes a projectile. A seatbelt through the handle, or the carrier wedged in a footwell behind a front seat, both work.

The two-person rule

If you can bring someone, do. One person drives; the other sits beside the carrier, talks quietly, and deals with the mess if there is mess. Driving alone with a screaming puppy is a genuine safety problem, not merely an unpleasant one.

If you have to go alone, put the carrier where you can reach it at a stop but not while moving, and plan a break every 45 to 60 minutes on a long drive.

Car sickness is common and mostly outgrown

Most puppies drool on early journeys and a fair number vomit. The balance system is still developing, and many dogs grow out of motion sickness in the first six to twelve months. What helps:

• No food in the two hours before travel
• Cool air and a cracked window for airflow
• A carrier roomy enough to lie down in, not one they must brace in
• Smooth driving — acceleration and braking matter more than speed

If your puppy still vomits on every journey past six months, that is a vet conversation. Effective prescription anti-nausea options exist, but they are your vet's call. Never improvise with human medication.

Where to stop, and where not to

On a long drive you will want a toilet break, and this is where the vaccination question arrives early. A partly vaccinated puppy should not be sniffing motorway service verges, which are among the highest-traffic dog toilet spots anywhere.

Carry the puppy to a quiet grass edge well away from the main path, or lay a pad in the boot with the tailgate open and let them use that. Arriving home

Do not walk in the front door and start the tour. Take the puppy straight to the toilet spot you have chosen, wait quietly until something happens, praise it, and then go inside.

Then keep the day dull. No party, no relatives, no meeting the neighbour's dog. Show the puppy the water bowl, the crate with its door propped open, and the toilet route, and let them explore one prepared room at their own pace. Expect the puppy to sleep hard within the hour. Puppies this age sleep most of the day, and a travel day burns more than a normal one. Let them.

The first meal at home

Offer a small meal of the food they were already eating, a couple of hours after arrival. Some puppies eat immediately. Plenty skip the first meal in a new house and eat normally by morning, and that on its own is not an emergency.

What is a vet call: a puppy refusing both food and water for more than about twelve hours, or one who is limp, cold, or vomiting repeatedly. Very young puppies, especially toy breeds, can drop their blood sugar quickly, so you ring early rather than waiting to see. With puppies, a false alarm is the good outcome.
