Why Does My House Still Smell Like Cat Litter?

In most homes the answer is one of four things: the box is not scooped often enough, the plastic itself has absorbed odor, urine went somewhere outside the box, or there are not enough boxes. The litter brand is a long way down the list, which is why buying a stronger one so rarely fixes it.

Work through the four in order. Each is cheap to test and the first one that is true is usually the whole answer.

Start with the smell test

Ammonia is what you are smelling — the product of bacteria breaking down urea in cat urine. That reaction needs time, warmth and moisture. Anything that shortens the time between a cat urinating and the urine leaving the house reduces the smell more than anything that tries to cover it.

1. Scoop frequency beats every product

No litter sold controls odor as well as removing the waste does. Twice a day in a multi-cat home, once a day minimum otherwise. That single habit outranks every "seven day odor control" claim on the shelf, and it is free.

2. The box itself is the smell

Plastic is porous enough to absorb urine over months, and scratched plastic absorbs faster. A box that smells within minutes of being emptied, washed and refilled has reached the end of its life. Most boxes want replacing yearly; a heavily used one in a multi-cat home sooner.

3. Urine that never made it into the box

This is the one people miss, because they keep working on the box while the actual source is two feet away. Urine wicks under baseboards, into carpet underlay, down the side of the box, and into anything soft nearby.

Find it with an inexpensive UV torch in a dark room — dried urine fluoresces. Then clean it with an enzyme cleaner, not a general-purpose one. Enzymes break down the uric acid crystals that ordinary detergents leave behind; those crystals are why a spot smells again every humid day for a year.

4. Not enough boxes

Two cats sharing one box produce a box that is over its limit within hours of every scoop. Adding a box is often a bigger odor improvement than any product, because it halves the load on each. The count rule is in how many litter boxes you need.

Then, and only then, the litter

Once the four above are handled, litter choice does make a modest difference. A hard-clumping formula that seals the urine into a solid mass leaves less behind on scooping than a soft clump that crumbles. Baking-soda and activated carbon formulas add some real capacity.
